How to change one brewing variable at a time
Turn a disappointing cup into a small, repeatable experiment.

Make a baseline cup
Choose a familiar recipe and measure the coffee and water. Use the same brewer and coffee for your next attempt. Record the grinder setting and your usual pouring or steeping method.
Choose the question before the adjustment
If you want to explore strength, change the coffee-to-water ratio. If you want to understand how grinding affects your recipe, hold the ratio steady and change the grinder setting by a small amount. Taste descriptions alone do not diagnose every brewing problem.
Compare under similar conditions
Use the same cups and give the drinks similar time to cool. Write down your preference before looking back at earlier notes. If the difference is unclear, repeat the comparison rather than making a large additional adjustment.
Stop when the recipe works for you
A good daily recipe should be enjoyable and easy to repeat. Keep the winning settings, and return to them when another experiment does not improve the cup.
